The other day, I drove over to Willacy County to look for deer to photograph. Willacy is an excellent place to take pictures of big White-tailed Deer and the other day was no exception!

12-point buck

This 12 pointer was pretty big!

I was surprised to see how many big bucks were limping or had part of their antlers broken off. Apparently, the rut takes a big toll on male deer.

I also saw this 10 point buck. It was resting to no doubt recuperate after fighting other bucks.

After a successful morning of deer photography, I went down to the marina in Port Mansfield to photograph Brown Pelicans. These big birds are always fun and easy to photograph.

At the marina, I also saw a Willet acting like a pelican and Double-crested Cormorants that seemed to be waiting for the pelicans to go away. The cormorants had to give up their perch every time a pelican decided it liked the spot.

Over the course of the day, I also got more use out of my macro lens. The more I  concentrate on macro photography, the more photos I take, and the more I enjoy it.

This tiny assassin bug was one of the more interesting macro subjects. This small creature uses its proboscis to pierce other insects and drink their body fluids.

Some beetles are extremely colorful, including this beauty!

It’s always a fun day when you can mix macro photography with pictures of larger birds and animals.
